That is the million dollar question and the difference between a satisfied and a dissatisfied customer. Of course there are permanent stains that can never be removed and should be addressed by your carpet cleaning professional once he looks at it. Pet urine stains, any type of artificially colored stains and many others are nearly impossible to remove but can be lightened. Stain kits are available to remove these stains but once again there are factors involved as far as longevity of the stain, volume and carpet color as well.
Ahhh.... yes, the do it yourselfer. Equipment and what type of chemical being used is a huge factor when cleaning carpets. There is nothing on the consumer level that can give you the type of cleaning power you need. Then there is the experience factor that only someone in the business can provide to give you the quality of cleaning you need. I've heard it's best to put off having your carpet cleaned as long as possible, is this true?
No. In fact, many of the major carpet mills today recommend professional cleaning at least once per year. The build up of soil in your carpet in combination with foot traffic creates abrasion that breaks down your carpet's fibers. The higher the traffic in a given area, the more often the carpet will need cleaning. Professional cleaning does not replace the weekly maintenance that you, the householder have to undertake, but it is essential for the weekly maintenance to remain effective.
We use air movers in the first room cleaned & can have that area pretty much dry by the time we leave. The rest in most cases it will be dry in 2-3 hours. This depends on the humidity, temperature of the home, the density of the fiber and how soiled the carpet is. To speed drying run the air conditioning, use fans, or if it's cold turn on the heat.
Yes. Use clean white socks and use extreme caution when walking from damp carpet to any hard surface. Hard surface floors will be slippery. Try to limit traffic until completely dry.

Let me start by defining the difference between a spot and a stain: A Spot- is any foreign material (soil, liquid, etc.) that is removable by standard cleaning methods. (The material is on or around the carpet fiber). A Stain- is foreign material (soil, liquid, etc.) on carpet that is not usually removable by standard cleaning methods. (The material has penetrated “soaked into’” the fiber and has changed the color or damaged the fiber itself). Some stains may be very difficult or impossible to remove.

With the cost of replacing carpet being as expensive as it is today, it is always best to try having the carpet professionally cleaned first. It is less costly and may make a world of difference.
Pet odor is a very common problem that could be much more complex than on first impression. Pet urine can easily soak through the backing of the carpet into the padding underneath. In more severe cases the urine can penetrate into the sub-floor beneath the padding. This creates a problem that is multi-layered.
The urine also provides for the growth of bacteria. This in turn contributes to a worsening of the odor problem and can contribute to permanent color loss of the carpet fiber. To eliminate this problem, the urine must be removed or neutralized from each of the layers affected. If the contamination is limited to only the face yarn of the carpet then the cleaning itself may effectively remove the odor. In more severe cases a urine neutralizer may be applied. In the most severe cases, replacement of the carpet padding, treatment of the under-side of the carpet and the sub-floor may be required. Even replacement of the carpet, however, can not guarantee complete removal of the odor.
